Covering 114,500 acres at normal capacity, Sam Rayburn is the most popular recreation area in the Pineywoods. The reservoir was originally named McGee Bend until President Lyndon B. Johnson renamed the lake after Speaker of the House and dear friend, Sam Rayburn.
